Advanced Technology – ORA Guided Cataract Surgery
Advances in diagnostics, techniques and lens replacement options have revolutionized how cataract surgery is performed today. Learn more about how ORA guided personalized measurements and Premium Lens replacement options are offering cataract patients optimized visual results.
ORA Guided Cataract Surgery is considered a “Game Changer” in the cataract surgery field and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston is proud to be one of the first eye care centers in the New England area to offer advanced cataract surgery using ORA.
The ORA System is a revolutionary new way to analyze your eye during your cataract procedure. It offers treatment tailored to your individual eye, thus helping to ensure optimal vision outcomes. Ora also gives you the best possible outcome the first time, thereby reducing the chances of needing an additional procedure.
When is it used? The ORA system is compatible with all lens implants, standard and premium along with all surgical technologies. ORA technology is included with all “Premium Lifestyle Lenses” and is highly recommended with all previous LASIK, PRK and RK surgical patients.
How does it work? ORA analyzes the eye, taking precise measurements during surgery, after the clouded cataract is removed, and when the surgeon has a clear view of eye. ORA – guided cataract surgery collects and confirms cataract measurement, helping to determine the optimal power intraocular lens for the best possible vision results.
There is no additional fee for using ORA when a “Premium Lifestyle Lens” is selected. For patients who choose a standard intraocular lens and want to have ORA during their cataract surgery, there is a small additional fee, which is not covered by insurance.
Cataract Surgery Lens Replacement Options
Standard Intraocular Lenses
Various lens replacement options are available. Some replacement lenses provide only near or distance vision, while others work more like your own natural vision providing near, intermediate and distance vision. The replacement lens that is right for you may be based upon your individual vision preferences, lifestyle, job, hobbies, and budget. When you meet with Dr. Rapoza, he can help you discover what lens may be best for you.
Standard intraocular lenses, also called monofocal lenses, are single-focus lenses that are designed to provide good vision at one focal point. Most commonly, people will choose to see well when looking at a distance, but glasses may still be needed for other activities like close-up and intermediate tasks such as reading books, menus, text messages, and computer work.
Advanced Cataract Surgery with Premium “Lifestyle” Lenses
Specialty lenses offer a more natural range of vision than standard monofocal intraocular lenses. Many patients who choose premium lenses enjoy excellent distance vision, intermediate vision, and near vision that will reduce or eliminate their need for glasses during most activities. Specialty lenses fall into three category classes, Accommodating Lenses, Multifocal Lenses and Toric Lenses.
Accommodating Lenses
- An Accommodating Intraocular Lens is an advanced type of specialty implant designed to allow you to see a range of vision distances, from near to far in all lighting conditions. Dr. Rapoza uses Crystalens® and TRULIGN™ Toric , accommodating intraocular lens by Bausch & Lomb. Crystalens® TRULIGN™ Toric work by a unique “flexing” action initiated in response to muscle contractions in the eye. This “accommodation” mimics the focusing ability of a healthy lens. Crystalens® and TRULIGN™ Toric are the only FDA approved accommodating IOLs available with more than 200,000 Crystalens® and TRULIGN™ Toric IOLs implanted worldwide. Dr. Rapoza has extensive experience with Crystalens® andTRULIGN™ Toric having implanted over 1,000 since 2009 and has been designated a Crystalens® Center of Excellence by Bausch & Lomb. Multifocal Lenses
- A Multifocal Intraocular Lens is an advanced specialty lens that is designed to have multiple focusing visual zones that can sharpen both near and distance vision much like bi-focal glasses. Multifocals lenses may provide better near vision than an accommodating lens for fine tasks or longer duration of reading, but may be associated with more blur and other visual distortions in general. Dr. Rapoza does not typically utilize these implants, due to a significant percentage of patients that have long term complaints of glare, halo, and ghost images.
Toric Lenses
- TRULIGN™ Toric Intraocular Lens: The Bausch & Lomb TRULIGN Toric intraocular lens is the first and only toric accommodating IOL. It not only provides a broader range of vision in all light conditions, like the Crystalens, but does so for those with astigmatism. This lens is more easily understood as a toric (astigmatism correcting) version of Crystalens. For more information, please visit www.trulign.com.
- enVista® Toric Intraocular Lens: The Bausch& Lomb Toric intraocular lens reduces or eliminates corneal astigmatism and significantly improves distance vision.
- TECNIS® Toric Intraocular Lens: The Johnson & Johnson Tecnis Toric intraocular lens reduces or eliminates corneal astigmatism and significantly improves vision at one point of focus.
