The conjunctiva is the protective membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the white of the eyes (the sclera). When it becomes irritated due to a bacterial or viral infection, you have a highly contagious condition called infectious conjunctivitis or pink eye.
Symptoms of Pink Eye
Viral Conjunctivitis will usually clear on its own without medical care, but Bacterial and Chlamydial Conjunctivitis requires medical treatment in the form of antibiotics as eyedrops or given orally. If treatment is delayed, the infection may worsen and cause corneal inflammation and a loss of vision.
